The Holding Point

The United States Army established the Elmira Holding and Reconsignment Point to hold military equipment and supplies during World War II. The site was built on a 670-acre plot north of Horseheads and was given to the Army on December 1, 1942. There, thousands of tanks, guns, and other weapons were stored before being sent overseas. Horseheads was one of ten sites around the United States that served the army in this capacity during the war and was chosen because of superior railroad services. After the war, the Holding Point became an important industrial site and now is the location of the Horseheads Industrial Center.

During WWII, Horseheads was the site of a POW camp that held Italian officers. Local residents of Italian descent would visit with the prisoners. One of the prisoners of war constructed this model church while he was held there. He gave it to an Italian-American boy living in Elmira as a confirmation gift.
