Youth Sports Organizatons
Organizations such as the Elmira Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and the Polathec Club of Elmira helped young boys build a community bond through sports. The YMCA building opened in 1925 and gave its members access to a modern recreational facility. Local churches such as the Trinity Church competed in basketball, bowling, and volleyball leagues at the YMCA. Membership was open to boys ages 12 and up whose family could afford the fee. The Polathec was organized for boys of Polish descent. Potential members had to submit a written application which was voted on by the existing members.
