Entertainment

The overall economic prosperity of the 1920s meant that many Elmirans had newfound time and money for leisure and entertainment both at home and out on the town.  Elmira’s vibrant live entertainment scene attracted people from around the area to theaters, concert halls, and amusement parks.  New technologies also made entertainment more accessible.  Movies became cheaper and more popular. Elmirans purchased radios and phonographs, which allowed them to have music in their homes without needing to know how to play an instrument.
