Leisure and Entertainment

Due to increased wages and decreased working hours, many people during the Gilded Age had more disposable income and time for leisure.  New technologies also helped the entertainment industry flourish.  The spread of railroads allowed performers and visitors to easily travel to local venues.  Businessmen and theater owners capitalized on these changes, creating new shows and entertainment venues.  While there was a wide variety of entertainment options, not all were available to everyone.  Class and social differences led to the development of the concept of high and low culture.
